Grassroots Innovations Uganda

The Grassroots Innovations Uganda (GIU) was created on the realization that the challenges facing the rural communities are due to an information gap between the policy makers and these grassroots communities. The available information at policy level, and from research institutions, in most cases, does not reach these rural communities for implementation. There is need to provide access to appropriate information and use a participatory approach to identify and find solutions that will encourage the development of an informed and prosperous community.

GIU believes that in order to help improve rural communities whose potential has been buried in years of helplessness and hopelessness habits, the rural people have to be exposed to appropriate knowledge that will help open their minds to new ways of thinking about themselves and their rural status.

GIU has identified a number of information needs of rural communities as;

  • Poor education standards in general, especially in science subjects, yet, they have to sit same competitive national exams with better equipped urban schools.
  • High school-drop out rates especially of girl children from rural schools. This is partially caused by cultural stereotypes which advocate for early marriages, and lack of inspiration due to absence of role models on how to attain a life that is better than what they are currently witnessing in rural areas. In this category are included orphans and children whose parents cannot afford fees/school requirements.
  • Need to inspire and supplement already available information on effective guidance (careers) for the in and out of school youth
  • Environmental degradation and its effects such as global warming, tree cover depletion etc, whose effects are already being felt in Uganda especially in rural areas, yet both the educated and non-educated have inadequate information about it, what it is, its causes, how to mitigate it and how to adapt to its effects.
  • Lack of useful and appropriate information on agriculture and health issues.
  • Idleness of rural youth that leads them to alcoholism, early/unwanted pregnancies and a general lack of direction.

Focusing on Education in Bukedea
